Strange serial number (Maybe) I recently acquired a Mdl 1894 S .44 Mag, 20" BBL in pristine condition. It has fine checkering on the stock as well as the forearm. The serial number is the strange part of this rifle it is 000272XX. When I tried to use the date of manufacture site I first tried "00" as the first two numbers.

If the barrel says "Microgrooved", then the serial number will either have a letter(s) prefix up to 1968, start with 69-71, or after that it will have IIRC the serial number on the top tang where you have to subtract the first 2 digits from 2000. Some 39A's, from 1954-1956, will have their barrels d&t'd for a Weaver N ..., The "Golden" was added as the gold plated trigger was also added to the 39-A line of guns in 1957. It will give all the letter gun production dates as well as how to determine year of manufacture after the letter gun ceased. Looks like a nice start to a fine Marlin rifle collection by the way., BLACKPOWDERX represents the months. I would also assume that this code will remain constant for the months. The year code begins with "E," when Remington production began, and continues sequentially. Using the barrel info provided by Scorpiusb, a code of "RL" should mean the rifle was made in November 2017. Thanks for the info, guys.
